What are the Different UK Work Visas?
If you are looking to work in the UK as a non-EEA national, you will need to apply for a UK work visa. There are two types of work visas: Tier 2 work visas for long-term positions and the Tier 5 work visa for those who wish to work on a short-term basis in the UK.
To work in the UK, you must have been offered a position in a UK company before you travel to the country. In other words, you cannot apply for UK work visa if you haven’t been offered a job by a UK employer.
Also, your prospective employer must provide you with your unique certificate of sponsorship reference number, which you will need to include in your work visa application.
There are different visas within the Tier 2 category, and they are as follows:
- Tier 2 (General): This is the standard Tier 2 work visa category
- Tier 2 Intra-company Transfer Visa: This is for those who have been offered a position in the UK branch of a multi-national company
- Tier 2 Sportsperson Visa: This is for professional sportspersons
- Tier 2 Minister of Religion Visa: For those who have been offered a position in a faith community in the UK
Usually, the Tier 5 Temporary Work Visa lasts for up to one year. In most cases, you will be able to extend the visa if you wish to carry on working in the UK. You can stay in the UK for up to five years and 14 days under a Tier 2 visa. After this time period, you will be eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain status.
