Jaibao: Family Visits to the UK

Jiabao was worried her family from Hong Kong would not be able to attend her wedding in the UK. However, after she contacted IAS and had a Skype advice session with an immigration lawyer, Jiabao, and her family’s stress was relieved. Three months later, Jiabao’s family was able to see her in her walk down the aisle.

1: The situation

Jiabao is a UK National and her parents are residents of Hong Kong.

She had moved to the UK as a Student, secured employment then residency and was engaged to a UK National.

She wanted to bring her family to the UK for her wedding but was worried about how difficult this would be.

Jiabao was uncertain and unwilling to take any risks that would spoil her plans, so she had dropped into IAS’ office for clarity.

2: How IAS helped

IAS confirmed that, as per the Immigration Rules, Hong Kong Nationals do not require a visa to enter the UK for a stay of six months or less. However, they must ensure that their passport is valid for the duration of their stay.

To ensure that there would be no issues, IAS arranged Skype sessions to speak to her family in Hong Kong and request copies of her family’s passport information pages so that they could be checked.

The lawyer explained all the details and answered all the questions that Jiabao’s family have. It was a long skype call but all the worries and stress felt by Jiabao and her family had been removed by the end.

3: The outcome

We noticed that Jiabao’s mother’s passport would have expired just before she was due to fly to the UK.

IAS advised her mother to inform the airline that the passport details would have to be updated.

With this information, they were able to have the passport renewed at their own convenience and assured that there would be no issues when entering the UK for Jiabao’s big day.
