What Is a Document Certification and Why Is It Needed?
Document certification is the process of verifying that a document is a true copy or translation of the original. It is often done by a professional such as a solicitor, notary public, or government official authorised to certify documents.
Certification is a mark of authenticity. It demonstrates that the document copy contains accurate information verified by an authority, thus reducing the risk of misrepresentation or fraud.
Some documents, such as state-issued documents, may also need to be apostilled or legalised after being certified for Irish visa applications. The apostille process must be completed by the government of the country that issued them.

What Documents Require Certification for an Irish Visa Application?
Coloured photocopies of any public or state-issued document, such as marriage or birth certificates, must be certified as true copies of the original and then apostilled. If your public documents were issued in Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria must apostille them.
Additionally, translated copies of all documents not in English or Irish must be certified. If the certified translation is a public document, it must also be apostilled.
The following public documents will need to be certified:
- Nigerian passports
- Birth certificates
- Adoption Order
- Death certificates
- Marriage certificates
- Divorce or marriage annulment certificates
- Educational certificates and qualifications
- Police reports
- Medical reports
- Bank statements
- Other court-issued documents and powers of attorney that support your visa application
Note that when applying for an Irish visa, you must submit the original copies of all your supporting documents and their coloured photocopies. The Irish immigration authorities will return your original documents after reviewing your application but will keep the photocopies.
How to Certify Documents for an Ireland Visa in Nigeria
Here is a step-by-step guide on how to certify your documents for an Ireland visa application in Nigeria.
Prepare Your Documents
Compile the original and photocopies of the documents you want to certify. The photocopies must be in coloured format, clear, and legible.
Book an Appointment with a Notary Public or Lawyer
You must book an appointment with a Nigerian notary public, commissioner for oaths, or lawyers who can certify your documents. You will find notary publics in law firms across the country, as well as commissioners for oaths in Nigerian courts.
Our immigration lawyers in Nigeria can also assist you with the notarisation process. Call +2342013306361 to book an appointment with our Nigerian office.
Certify Your Documents
You must submit the original documents and photocopies to the notary public or solicitor. The presiding professional will require an identification document with your passport photograph and signature, such as your National Identity Card (NIN), a valid passport, or a driver’s license.
After verifying your identity, they will inspect your documents for genuineness. If they’re satisfied, they will let you sign them. Then, they will add their signature and official seal or stamp to the documents. They must also date it and print their name under the signature.
Inform the notary public to write “Certified to be a true copy of the original” on the document. The Irish immigration authorities also require them to include their occupation, address, and phone number on the document.
Note that the official can refuse to certify any document that they deem inauthentic, incomplete, or contains discrepancies.
Authenticate Your Documents
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in Abuja must authenticate or apostille the certified true copies and translations of all state-issued documents in your Ireland visa application.
If you intend to apostille academic documents such as a senior secondary school certificate or bachelor’s or master’s degree, you must first legalise it with the Ministry of Education in Abuja before visiting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for an apostille.
You can include your documents in your visa application after the legalisation process.
Certifying Nigerian Passport Documents for Visa Use
You must certify your Nigerian passport when applying for an Ireland visa. This includes your valid passport and all previously owned and expired passports. If you cannot certify and present your old passports, you must provide a police report explaining why.
The process of certifying your passport is similar to that of other documents. You must make a coloured photocopy of your passport’s biodata page and all pages containing previous visas and entry and exit stamps. Certify these copies with an authorised professional and legalise them at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Certified Translations for Irish Visa Applications
Documents issued in Nigeria will typically be in English. However, in some cases, Nigerian applicants may have documents, such as academic certifications, issued abroad in non-English-speaking countries.
You must provide a certified translation if you have a document not in English or Irish. The translation must be accurate and error-free, carried out by an agency or translator with a reputable international presence and experience with visa document translation.
Your translator must include personal details like occupation, address and phone number on the translated copies, as well as name, signature and date. They must also include a written statement that the “translation of the original document is true and accurate” on the translated copy.
If the translated documents are public-issued, you must certify and legalise them. Then, you should include them with the original copies in your visa application.
Where to Certify Documents in Nigeria: Notaries, Solicitors, and Peace Commissioners
Here are the professionals who can certify your documents in Nigeria.
Notary Public
A notary public is a senior lawyer appointed by the Chief Justice of Nigeria to serve as a fair witness to official documents signings. They make affirmations, administer oaths, verify identities, and certify documents. A notary public must have served as a lawyer for at least seven years.

A commissioner for oaths performs a similar job to a notary. The Supreme Court appoints them to administer oaths, verify identities, sign affidavits, and certify documents. You can find a commissioner for oaths in courts across different cities in Nigeria.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Incomplete or Incorrect Certification
If the Notary Public fails to sign, stamp, or include their contact details on your document, the immigration authorities can deem your documents incorrectly certified and return your application. Ensure that the professional certifies the document per Irish immigration demands.
Unauthorised Certification
The immigration authorities can reject your application if the documents are certified by an unauthorised professional. Work with approved professionals and ensure the certified copies include a valid stamp and contact details.
Non-Certified Translations
Not certifying translated documents can also lead to an application rejection. Ensure to certify any translation and accompany them with a statement of accuracy from the translators to enhance their credibility.
Missing Translations
Accidentally submitting documents in other languages can result in a return or rejection. If the translations of some sections of your documents are missing, the authorities will refuse your application. Thoroughly inspect your document before submitting it to avoid instances of missing or partial translations.
