F2B Visa Overview
The F2B visa is a Family Based Green card which is under the United States Family Preference category. It allows unmarried children who are 21 years of age or older to join their parents who are permanent residents in the U.S.
You may not qualify for the F2B visa if you cannot prove your relationship with your parents in the U.S. through documentation. The F2B visa allows adult children of the U.S. Green Card holders to come to the U.S. live, study and work.
The F2B visa has a cap per fiscal year. This means that once the limit of the visa allocation to applicants is reached, the unsuccessful applicants will then wait for their own turn.
The yearly cap for F2B visas is 34,260 which is 30% of the total visa allocation for the F2 visas which is approximately 114,200. With the other 70% of the visa (79,940) going to F2A visas which are designed for spouses and minor children of U.S. lawful permanent residents.
F2B Visa Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the F2B visa, you need to meet the F2B visa requirements. They include:
- You must be 21 years old or above
- You must be unmarried.
- You must have a completed application form and documentation.
- You will need to show evidence of the relationship between you and your U.S. LPR parent.
Sponsor Eligibility for F2B Visa
To sponsor your child to come over to the United States, you need to meet the following requirements:
- Be a Green Card holder
- Live in the U.S. with a known address.
- Prove that you’re the parent of the person you’re petitioning for and show evidence for it.
It should be noted that Green Card holders are also known as Permanent Resident Aliens or LPRs who are lawfully permitted to live in the United States. permanently. Additionally, upon meeting certain eligibility requirements, the Green Card holder can apply to become a U.S. citizen.
Filing a Petition for F2B Visa
The petition stage is the initial step in the entire process. This is a crucial step in the application process for an F2B visa. The application cannot be processed if a petition is not submitted or is submitted but denied.
The petition must be completed by the sponsor who is a United States LPR. The petition must be submitted using Form I-130 (Petition for Alien Relative), to the Department of Homeland Security as part of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
The LPR has to pay a fee set by the USCIS after which the USCIS will process the petition. After that, a response from the USCIS will be sent to the sponsor.
If the petition is denied, the sponsor will be informed along with the reasons for the denial. The sponsor now has the chance to fix the issues and resend the petition.
The paperwork will be delivered to the National Visa Center (NVC) for additional processing if the petition is approved. Afterward, the NVC will notify the adult child about the F2B visa status and then send the adult child a package with further instructions regarding the following stages in the process.
The package will have an invoice ID number and the case number which the adult child will need for an application to the U.S. embassy. The forms and fee requirements and an outline of the remaining stages of the process will be contained in the package.
F2B Visa Application Process
There are key steps you need to take in order to apply for an F2B visa. They include:
- Sponsor fills the petition Form I-130 and sends it to the USCIS
- NVC receives the petition if approved
- Overseas applicant receives a package from the NVC which explains the next steps
- A slot for visa application becomes available
- The applicant fills out Form DS-260 to begin the F-2B visa application process
- The applicant brings together the required documents
- Vaccinations and medical examination are carried out
- F2B visa interview is attended by the applicant at the U.S. embassy or consulate
- The applicant receives NVC packet after passport is stamped
- The applicant goes to the U.S.

Required Documents for F2B Visa Application
You need to provide some documents for your F2B visa application. They include:
- A passport that would be valid for 6 months after your entry date into the United States
- Two photographs that meet the U.S. visa standard
- The confirmation page of Form DS-260
- A signed Affidavit of Support from U.S. petitioner (Form I-864)
- A valid adoption or birth certificate
- Documents of your medical examination and vaccination.
- A divorce or death certificate to prove marriage official termination if you have been previously married.
- Military certificate, if you have served in the military.
- Criminal and court records and/or police certificate.
It should be noted that if you provide any documents that are not written in English, they must be translated by an accredited translator. Therefore, documents that are not in English are rejected in the application.
Medical Examination and Vaccinations for F-2B Visa
Just like some other visas, it is mandatory that you have a medical examination if you’re planning to immigrate to the U.S. You must take the necessary vaccines and medical examination explained in the package the NVC will send to you.
The package also contains a list of various checkups you must get from a renowned doctor. Therefore, you need to complete the checkups, required vaccinations and have the documents ready to be sent to the NVC.
F2B Visa Interview Process
Your application will be processed once you send them to the NVC, including all the required documents. The NVC will now decide whether you meet the necessary criteria. If they approve your application, then an interview will be scheduled at the U.S. embassy or consulate in Nigeria.
The final and most important stage in the application process for an F2B visa is the interview stage. At the interview, the consulate or embassy will have one copy of your application.
You will be interviewed by one official from the embassy and determine whether to accept or refuse your F2B visa application. If your visa application is accepted, the U.S. embassy or consulate will stamp your visa which is in your passport. Thereafter you will be allowed to travel to the U.S.
You must not open a sealed packet that will be given to you. You must take the sealed packet with you when traveling to the U.S. Because it will be opened by a U.S. immigration official when you get to the U.S. airport.
F2B Visa Fees
Throughout the F2B visa application process, there are various fees that the applicant and the petitioner must pay. These fees are set by the DHS, USCIS and individual U.S. consulate or embassy in Nigeria and these fees also vary.
The main fees to be paid include:
- Petition for Alien Relative (Form I-130) $535
- DS-260 form fee
- Medical examination fee
- Fees for documents translation (if needed)
- Vaccination(s) fees
- USCIS immigrant fee. You may pay this fee after you have received your visa and before you travel to the United States.
Processing Time for F2B Visa
The F2B visa processing time is unfortunately unknown, as there is no set time on how long you should expect getting your visa application processed.
While some other applicants have to wait for 2 years or even more to get their visas. Therefore, you will have to wait and start your application process once your date becomes current.
Tips for Filling out F2B Visa Forms
You need the following tips in order to fill your F2B visa forms to the required standard:
- Use black ink. Consider completing the forms electronically if you have the option. The forms can also be printed out and filled out with black ink.
- Before submitting the application ensure you review your details. This is because your valuable processing time could suffer for any mistake you make in your details.
- Have translations for all your documents in English if they are not already written in English.
What Happens if the Sponsor Becomes a U.S. Citizen Before the Application Is Processed?
Because of how long it takes for the F2B visa to be processed, your sponsor might become a U.S. citizen even before your visa application is processed.
In this case, the sponsor will be allowed to submit a fresh petition for an application for Immediate Relatives (IR). There are no quotas for IR applications, and applicants will benefit from faster processing time.
