Need To Meet A-Level Standards Of English
Applicants for certain UK visas will be expected to meet A-level standards of English as part of a crackdown on immigration levels to the UK.
It is expected the new requirements will come into force at the start of 2026 and will apply to applicants wishing to move to the UK under a High-Potential Individual, Skilled Worker or Scale-up visa.
At the moment, applicants must show they meet the B1 level, but if the government plans are approved by Parliament this will increase to a B2 level requirement from January 8th 2026.
“You Must Learn Our Language”
Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, explained: “This country has always welcomed those who come to this country and contribute.
“But it is unacceptable for migrants to come here without learning our language, unable to contribute to our national life.
“If you come to this country, you must learn our language and play your part.”
All tests must be carried out by a Home Office approved provider and the A level equivalent standard will need to be demonstrated in speaking, listening, reading and writing.
What Does B2 English Language Standard Mean?
The CEFR (the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is used to assess an individual’s fluency in any language native to countries in Europe. Under the framework, the B2 level is achieved by those able to communicate comfortably and fluently with native speakers in a range of situations.
This is compared to the B1 level which requires a level of understanding that is more limited to familiar topics.
According to the government’s own assessment of the changes, the increase in English standards may lead to fall in successful applications of up to 1,500 visa applicants in the first year of implementation.
Are You Worried About The Forthcoming Requirements?
If you are thinking of applying for a visa that may be impacted by the forthcoming increase in criteria then you may wish to apply sooner rather than later. The government has also suggested the higher standard of English may also be eventually rolled out to other visas, including those for family dependents.
