How Do I Sponsor a Visitor to the UK?

You can sponsor someone visiting the UK by offering to pay for their travel, living expenses or accommodation. This could be a family member, friend or another person with whom you have a genuine personal or professional relationship.

To support their Standard Visitor visa application, you must be able and willing to provide the support you promise. You may need to provide evidence of your relationship, the assistance you will provide and your ability to afford it.

However, sponsoring a visitor does not guarantee that their visa will be approved. They must still meet the UK’s visitor requirements and show that their visit is temporary. This guide explains who can sponsor a visitor, what documents may be needed and how the sponsorship process works.

What Does It Mean to Sponsor a Visitor to the UK?

Sponsoring a visitor usually means agreeing to cover some or all of their costs while they are in the UK. This may include travel, accommodation and everyday living expenses.

You do not necessarily have to pay for the entire visit. You could, for example, provide accommodation while the visitor pays for their flights and personal expenses. Your letter and supporting evidence should explain exactly what you will provide.

Visitor sponsorship is different from sponsoring a worker under a work visa route. There is no general sponsor licence or Certificate of Sponsorship required simply to support someone applying for a Standard Visitor visa.

Under paragraph V 4.3 of Appendix V: Visitor, third-party support is permitted where the sponsor has a genuine personal or professional relationship with the applicant and can and will provide the promised support for the intended visit.

Who Can Sponsor a UK Visitor Visa?

A visitor may receive support from a family member, friend, employer or another person with a genuine personal or professional relationship with them. The sponsor does not automatically have to be a British citizen or the visitor’s relative.

To qualify as a third-party sponsor under the Visitor rules, you must:

• have a genuine professional or personal relationship with the visitor.
• Comply with UK immigration law where applicable. A sponsor who is in the UK must not be in breach of immigration law at the relevant time.
• Be able and willing to provide the financial support, accommodation or other assistance you have promised.
• Have sufficient resources to support yourself and anyone who normally depends on you, as well as the visitor, if you are providing financial support.

What Documents Does a Sponsor Need for a UK Visitor Visa?

The documents required to sponsor UK Visitor Visa include:

• A sponsorship or invitation letter: Explain your relationship with the visitor, the reason for their visit, the intended duration and which expenses you will cover.
• Proof of identity and status: If relevant, provide evidence of your identity and your immigration status in the UK.
• Financial evidence: If you are paying for the visit, provide suitable evidence of your available funds, such as recent bank statements showing the origin of the money or evidence of your earnings.
• Evidence of the relationship: Depending on the relationship, this might include a birth or marriage certificate, or other relevant evidence showing how you know the visitor.
• Accommodation details: If the visitor will stay with you, state the address and explain the arrangements. Provide additional evidence where it is relevant to the circumstances.

How Do You Sponsor Someone’s UK Visitor Visa Application?

You can support a visitor’s application by following these steps:

1. Agree on the support. Decide whether you will pay for travel, accommodation, living expenses or only part of the visit.
2. Prepare your evidence. Write a letter explaining your relationship with the visitor and what you will provide. Gather relevant documents to support your statements.
3. Give the documents to the visitor. The applicant should declare the support in their visa application and include the relevant evidence.
4. Check that the details are consistent. The planned visit, source of funds, accommodation and expenses should match the information in the application and the sponsor’s letter.
5. The visitor submits the application. Where a Standard Visitor visa is required, the applicant generally applies online before travelling and completes the required identity checks.

A priority service may be available for a faster decision, usually within five working days, or a super priority service may be available for a decision by the end of the next working day. Availability and processing targets depend on the application and location.

Can You Sponsor a UK Visitor If You Live Outside the UK?

Yes. A sponsor does not necessarily have to live in the UK to provide financial support for a visitor. They must still have a genuine personal or professional relationship with the applicant and be able and willing to provide the promised support.

If you live abroad, explain how you will provide the support and include appropriate evidence of your identity, relationship with the visitor and financial arrangements where relevant. If you are not providing accommodation in the UK, make sure the visitor’s application explains where they will stay and how that accommodation will be paid for.

The visitor must still meet the relevant UK visitor requirements independently. The rules on third-party support are set out in Appendix V, paragraph V 4.3.

What Must the Visitor Prove if Someone Else Is Sponsoring Them?

A sponsor’s financial support does not automatically make someone eligible for a UK visitor visa. The visitor must still satisfy the Home Office that they are a genuine visitor, intend to leave the UK at the end of their visit and will undertake only activities permitted under the Visitor route.

The application should explain the purpose and length of the visit, where the visitor will stay and how the costs will be covered. The visitor may rely on their own funds, support from a third party or a combination of both.

The Home Office considers the application as a whole, including the visitor’s personal and financial circumstances, travel history and ties to their country of residence. A sponsor’s letter cannot guarantee approval.

Financial Requirements To Sponsor a Visitor to the UK

Those who apply for UK Visit Visa should prove that they have sufficient funds to manage all reasonable expenses in connection with their UK visit without accessing public funds. The expenses include:

• Their onward/return journey, expenses incurred by dependents and the costs of specified activities like private medical treatments.
• In cases in which the visit is sponsored by a friend or family member, the sponsor documents should show that the travel expenses, living expenses and accommodation costs will be covered by the sponsor.
• Examples of financial evidence include bank statements showing the origin of funds, proof of earnings or relevant financial records; the documents should demonstrate the funds available in the applicant’s actual circumstances.
• The applicant need not show that he/she has a prescribed level of funds to meet living expenses, travel expenses and costs of accommodation.

Who Can Write a UK Visitor Visa Invitation Letter?

An invitation letter can be provided by a person offering genuine support for a UK visitor’s application. The sponsor must meet the applicable third-party support conditions, including having a genuine personal or professional relationship where required and being able and willing to provide the support promised.

If the sponsor is offering accommodation, they should explain the arrangements and provide relevant evidence. A sponsor who is not providing accommodation does not need to house the visitor, provided that the application clearly explains the actual arrangements and the overall application meets the Visitor requirements.

How to Write a UK Visitor Visa Sponsorship Letter

A UK visitor invitation letter should clearly identify the sponsor and visitor, explain their relationship and the purpose of the visit, give the intended dates and accommodation arrangements, and state exactly which costs the sponsor will cover. The letter should match the application and supporting evidence; it does not replace the visitor’s own evidence. Use the Home Office’s supporting-documents guidance when preparing the supporting documents.

The Standard Visitor route does not prescribe a universal affidavit-of-support form. Instead, the applicant should provide evidence relevant to their circumstances and any support being offered.

A clear invitation or support letter can explain the relationship, purpose of the visit, accommodation and who will pay the costs. The Home Office’s supporting-documents guide explains the evidence to provide when someone else funds or accommodates a visitor. Do not give any information that you cannot support with documents, which you have to submit alongside the letter of sponsorship.

Structure of a Sponsor Letter

• The letter should be addressed to the staff of the embassy with the opening salutation ‘Dear sir/madam’. Next, give your name and other personal details as to where you live and what you work, the reason why you are writing the letter and for whom.
• Give information on the expenses you are going to cover and how you will be doing that. Give the dates when the trip of the applicant will take place, and if he/she will be staying over at your place in one of the Schengen states, mention that, giving the address of the place.
• If you will be spending time with the applicant, while in Schengen, it would be nice if you wrote just a few words on the places you are planning to visit together, kind of like a short one-paragraph travel itinerary.
• Do not forget to mention that you “have attached supporting documents” to the letter of support you are sending. Sign the letter at the end, under your name. Do not leave out details like the date when you wrote the letter.
• Despite the guideline given above, you need to take into account some small pieces of advice when writing the letter. Below find the ultimate tips on how to write a sponsorship letter for a Schengen visa.
• Do not make it too personal – it is one thing to explain in the letter your relationship with the applicant, and another to tell throughout the whole letter how much you have missed them, love them, and want to see them. The consular officer does not care about that, he just wants to make sure you will be paying the expenses of the applicant. Besides, such details will make the letter longer, which you are strongly advised not to do.
• Do not give unnecessary details – above we advised you to explain why you are sponsoring the applicant, as well as to give details on the expenses you have to cover. However, do not go way too much into details giving unnecessary information such as, where you will be eating breakfast each day and how much each breakfast will cost you. The consular officer is not interested to hear that. Instead, just show the available amount of money that you are sponsoring the applicant with, and explain the expenses he or she will be able to cover with that money, i.e. accommodation and food.
• Do not make it too long – as we said a few times now, try to avoid unnecessary information and keep your letter short and clear. The consular officers do not have the time, nor the wish to read a two-page letter, which could have instead been shortened to a few paragraphs.

Another important thing you shall not forget, aside from your name, occupation and home address, take care to also submit your phone number and email, so in case of need, the embassy will be able to contact you and you will have the chance to clarify any of the information if needed.

What Evidence Should the Sponsor Attach?

There are no general rules guiding what documents sponsors providing an invitation letter should submit. Inviting someone to live with you in the UK may require the following documents:

• A scanned copy of your passport or ID to confirm your identification
• Evidence of your immigration status in the UK, such as a visa
• Proof of your residence in the UK, such as a mortgage statement or tenancy agreement
• Proof of funds where you undertake to financially support the applicant during their stay in the UK, such as bank statements or pay slips
• If you are arranging accommodation for the applicant, you will need to provide evidence of this in the form of a letter from the landlord/agent, or confirmation of a bed and breakfast/hotel booking
• If the visit is for a special family occasion, for example, celebrating a wedding, birth or important anniversary, consider including an invitation giving details of the event, as well as when and where it is to take place
• Any other document that you believe will help the applicant in getting their visa, for example, a short travel itinerary of the places you plan to visit together in the UK.
