Further Countries Added to US Travel Ban
The start of 2026 will see a number of countries added to the current US travel ban. Citizens from Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Laos, Sierra Leone, South Sudan and Syria as well as those travelling with Palestinian Authority-issued documents will be prevented from entering the US.
In addition, the US will also introduce partial restrictions on travellers from 15 other countries, including Nigeria, Tanzania and Zimbabwe.
It is expected those who already have valid US visas or are lawful permanent residents of the US will not be subjected to the travel ban. There is also set to be exemptions for those applying for certain visa categories such as diplomats or athletes – particularly important given the 2026 FIFA World Cup which is taking place in Northern America.
A statement from the White House said all travel restrictions will remain in place until countries show “credible improvements” in cooperating with US immigration authorities.
US Travel Ban Now Impacting Close to 40 Countries
The initial introduction of the travel ban earlier in the year impacted citizens of Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen who were unable to enter the US. In addition, nationals of Burundi, Cuba, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela continue to face partial restrictions when travelling to the US.
More countries have now been added to this initial list and it is likely that more countries will be added to the ban over the coming months.
