75th Anniversary of the Windrush
2023 marks the 75th anniversary of the Empire Windrush, which first brought Caribbean immigrants to the UK in 1948.
To mark this anniversary, a range of programmes, events and celebrations are planned to promote the impact and significant of the Windrush generation and its descendants on modern British culture.
The convener of the Windrush 75 Network, Patrick Vernon, has stated that the anniversary is a ‘Diamond Jubilee for modern, diverse Britain’, also stating that ‘The 75th anniversary is something every institution should mark in a significant way in 2023’.
A range of high-profile individuals, celebrities and business leaders have also spoken out to promote the anniversary.

Wide-Ranging Support
Support for the anniversary has come from individuals such as the actor Sir Lenny Henry; the historian David Olusoga; the CEO of NHS England, Amanda Pritchard; and the Chief People Officer at Royal Mail, Zareena Brown.
Sir Lenny Henry is planning to stage a one man play, August in England, about the Windrush scandal later this year. He has also written a six-part drama, Three Little Birds, about the Windrush that will air on ITV.
The V&A Museum are also planning a range of exhibitions, workshops and talks to mark the anniversary.
Tristram Hunt, Director of the V&A, has stated that ‘The programme of events will tell rich, layered stories about the Windrush generation and their legacies through objects from the V&A Collection and beyond, showcasing artists and designers associated with Windrush and exploring the impact of the Caribbean presence on art, design and culture in Britain.’
Windrush Scandal
Alongside the celebrations planned, several individuals have also drawn attention to the Windrush scandal and have called for further action to be taken by the government to pay recompense to its victims.
The Shadow Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, has stated that the Windrush anniversary is ‘A time to celebrate how migration and diversity has helped build modern Britain – but also to put pressure on the government to finally give the victims of the Windrush scandal the compensation they deserve.’
Additionally, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan has stated that ‘As we come together to mark this 75 year milestone, we must also recommit to putting right the mistreatment the Windrush generation have endured. Their appalling treatment by the Government is a stain on our nation’s conscience, as is our immoral immigration system’.
Windrush Day itself will take place on 22 June this year.
