Global Talent Visa: New Design Industry Route Now Open

What Has Changed

• On 5 March 2026, the Home Office published Statement of Changes HC 1691, adding a new Design Industry endorsement pathway to Appendix Global Talent
• The pathway has been open since 1 July 2026, with its own criteria split between exceptional talent and exceptional promise applicants
• Design still sits under the wider Global Talent route, but it no longer borrows criteria built for architecture, fashion, or film and television
• Track record, recommendation letters, and supporting evidence are now assessed against rules written specifically for design
• Two other Global Talent changes came in the same statement: the academic and research fast-track endorsement requirements were tightened, and the English language requirement for settlement rises from B1 to B2 for anyone applying on or after 26 March 2027

The New Design Industry Endorsement

To receive an endorsement in the field of design, an applicant must satisfy the endorsing body that they have been recognised as an exceptional talent or a person with exceptional promise in design. They must also meet the relevant track record and evidential requirements.

Applicants must be professionally engaged in producing outstanding applied, published, distributed, or internationally exhibited work. They must show regular professional engagement in design during the last 5 years

Which Design Roles Are Covered

The route is built for professional achievements in design, not for any single job title.

It can fit a wide range of design careers, including:

• Product designers, including those working in physical, digital, or industrial product design
• Graphic designers and visual communication designers
• UX and service designers, where the evidence shows recognition in design rather than only in a technological product
• Industrial and spatial designers, including those whose work sits close to architecture
• Designers whose work overlaps with fashion, where the recognition is more naturally a design achievement than a fashion one

Where a design career overlaps with another creative or technical field, the endorsing body will consider where the evidence lies.

A UX designer whose recognition is closely tied to a technology product may fit better under the Digital Technology route, and a designer whose work sits mainly in fashion may fit better under the Fashion Design route. The right choice depends on the applicant’s evidence, not their job title.

Requirements

• Exceptional talent applicants must show a substantial track record in at least 2 countries
• Exceptional promise applicants must be at an early stage of their career and show a developing track record in one or more countries

Required Supporting Documents Under the Immigration Rules

Applicants must provide all of the following:

• A CV setting out their professional design career to date
• Three dated letters of recommendation supporting the Global Talent application
• Two letters from well-established design organisations that the applicant has worked with in a design capacity, which are acknowledged experts in the applicant’s field, with at least one letter from a UK-based organisation and the other from an organisation based in the UK or overseas
• A third letter from another well-established design organisation or an individual the applicant has worked with in a design capacity, who has recognised experience in the applicant’s field of design
• The applicant must have personally worked with the person or organisation providing each letter

Evidence of Exceptional Talent

Applicants seeking endorsement as exceptional talent must provide evidence for at least two of the following:

• At least two examples of significant media recognition in at least two countries, which may include the applicant’s country of residence
• Winning, or making a significant contribution to winning, at least one international design award for excellence
• Internationally significant professional appearances, publications, or exhibitions in at least two countries, or extensive international distribution and sales of work completed as an individual, named member of a group, or contributor

Evidence of Exceptional Promise

Applicants seeking endorsement as exceptional promise must provide evidence for at least two of the following:

• At least two examples of recent media recognition in at least one country, which may include the applicant’s country of residence
• Winning, significantly contributing to winning, being nominated or shortlisted for, or significantly contributing to a nomination or shortlisting for, at least one international award for excellence
• Recognised professional appearances, publications, or exhibitions in at least one country, or evidence of international distribution and sales of work completed as an individual, named member of a group, or contributor

Design Business Association Endorsement Requirements

Design Industry applications are assessed by the Design Business Association (DBA) on behalf of Arts Council England.

The DBA applies the documentary requirements set out above within a defined evidence bundle format, so the CV, letters, and supporting evidence described in the previous section all need to meet the following practical limits when submitted:

Evidence Bundle Format

• Up to 10 single pieces of evidence, each showing exceptional talent or exceptional promise
• Each piece of evidence must be 2 sides of A4 or less
• Evidence must be dated within the last 5 years
• Three letters of recommendation, every 3 sides of A4 or less, excluding the author’s credentials and contact details
• A typed CV covering the applicant’s professional design career and education

Media Recognition Evidence

Where an applicant relies on media recognition, the DBA expects reviews by design critics from internationally recognised, well-established media outlets.

Each piece of media evidence should show the critic’s name, the date of publication, the country the review is from, and a comment on the quality of the applicant’s work.

Award Evidence

International design awards can support either route, but grants and bursaries are not accepted as prizes. Exceptional promise applicants may also rely on a nomination or shortlisting for a qualifying award, where the other criteria are met.

Evidencing Client, Agency, or Collaborative Work

Design work is often produced for an employer, agency, studio, or client rather than under the designer’s own name, and this doesn’t rule the work out as evidence. What matters is showing what the applicant personally did and why it was significant.

• Where the applicant is named in public-facing material, this should be highlighted clearly in the evidence
• Where the applicant isn’t named, a supporting letter from a senior person at the relevant organisation can confirm their role and contribution
• Redacted documents, public-facing extracts, or a carefully worded confirmation letter can address confidential or commercially sensitive projects
• Evidence showing only that the applicant worked on a project, without confirming their specific contribution, is unlikely to meet the recognition threshold on its own

Exceptional Talent or Exceptional Promise: Which Route to Choose

The right route depends on career stage, the strength of recognition, and the evidence available, not on which category sounds more prestigious.

The route chosen also affects settlement. Applicants endorsed as exceptional talent can apply to settle after 3 continuous years in the UK, while those endorsed as exceptional promise need 5 years.

This is worth weighing alongside the strength of the available evidence, not just which route is easier to qualify under now.

Applying via the Prestigious Prizes Route

Applicants who have won a qualifying prestigious prize can bypass the endorsement stage and apply for the visa directly. There is currently no separate design table within Appendix Global Talent: Prestigious Prizes, so eligible prizes are drawn from the wider list.

• The applicant must be the named recipient of the prize, not simply affiliated with the winning organisation or group
• Where a prize is awarded to a group, the applicant must be named as one of the recipients
• The prize must not have been withdrawn or suspended

Fees and Costs

Applicants relying on endorsement pay the Global Talent application fee in two parts, plus the Immigration Health Surcharge and any dependant costs.

• Endorsement application fee: £561
• Visa application fee: £205
• Total application fee: £766
• Immigration Health Surcharge: charged separately, scaled to the length of permission requested, up to 5 years
• Each dependant pays their own application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge
• Fees are reviewed periodically, so it’s worth checking the current rates before applying

Other Global Talent Changes to Know About

Academic and Research Fast-Track

HC 1691 simplified the fast-track endorsement criteria for academic and research appointments. The route covers applicants who have accepted an eligible role at an approved UK higher education institution or research institute.

The role must require a PhD or equivalent research experience as an essential qualification. Equivalent research experience can include academic, industrial, or clinical research.

Applicants must also have responsibility for academic, research, or innovation leadership and development, or perform research or innovation as a primary function of their role.

English Language Requirement for Settlement

For Global Talent settlement applications made on or after 26 March 2027, applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency at B2 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages for speaking and listening, unless an exemption applies.

Applicants who apply before 26 March 2027 remain subject to the B1 speaking and listening requirement, unless exempt.

• The Design Industry endorsement gives design applicants their own set of Global Talent criteria, an outstanding professional track record, plus proof of either exceptional talent or exceptional promise
• Evidence requirements include recommendation letters, professional engagement, media recognition, awards, appearances, publications, exhibitions, and international sales or distribution, all specifically written for design. Pick evidence that matches the criterion you’re applying under, not just whatever looks impressive
• Endorsement comes first. Applicants who don’t qualify through the Prestigious Prizes route can’t move on to a Global Talent visa application without it
• The strongest applications don’t read like a CV. They map each document to a specific published criterion, because a general career summary rarely shows an assessor how the requirements are actually met
