New Citizenship Law Attempts to Address National Security Concerns
The Deprivation of Citizenship Orders (Effect during Appeal) Act 2025 has been passed by Parliament as part of government concerns over national security.
Prior to the new law, anyone successfully appealing a British citizenship removal would automatically regain their status, even if subsequent appeals overturned the initially successful appeal.
However, going forward it means the government can choose to not release people from detention or not allow them to re-enter the UK if they decide the risk to the public is too high.
“This Law Makes Us All Safer”
Security Minister Dan Jarvis explained it the new law was vital for “protecting our country and our people”.
He added: “We have strengthened our ability to keep the most dangerous people out of Britain – those who threaten our safety, our way of life, and the values we stand for. This law makes us all safer.”
It now means appeal outcomes will be handled in the same way as asylum and human right appeals, where the right to stay is not granted until all appeals are completed.
