June 2024 Immigration Updates
Australia
The Australian government announced changes to their student immigration policies this month.
To potentially reduce net migration and lower the demand for housing, the cost of a Student Visa has more than doubled. International students looking to study in the country will see the cost of an application rise to A$1,600 from A$710.
In addition, those already in Australia on a Visitor Visa or a Temporary Graduate Visa will not be able to switch to a study visa unless they leave the country and apply from overseas.
“The changes coming into force… will help restore integrity to our international education system, and create a migration system which is fairer, smaller and better able to deliver for Australia.” explained Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil.
Canada
The minimum fund requirements for those applying for Canadian permanent residence via Express Entry have been updated.
Those applying for the Federal Skilled Worker Program and the Federal Skilled Trades Program must have proof of funds. However, those applying under the Canadian Experience Class or with a valid job offer are exempt.
The exact minimum of funds is related to an applicant’s family size, but a four-member family must now show access to funds of at least CAD$ 27,297.
China
Two further countries have been added to China’s visa-free travel list. Visitors from Australia and New Zealand will no longer need a visa if they are coming to China for 15 or fewer days for tourism, business, or visiting family.
The changes come following a rise in direct flights to China from both countries, as well as a growing worldwide increase in China as a tourist destination.
Spain
Spain’s Mbappe Law is expected to come into force in summer. Named after the famous footballer Kylian Mbappe, the law means overseas investors will be entitled to a 20 percent reduction in personal income tax rates if investing in eligible companies and assets based in Madrid.
With the proposed removal of the Golden Visa, the Mbappe Law could apply to those looking to relocate and invest in Spain.
United States
A new visa appointment booking service will benefit those applying for US visas from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.
In a move to improve the visa application process for those looking to live, work, or study in the UK, the new service will enable applicants to pay visa fees, schedule a visa appointment and send documents.
