How Long Is the Global Talent Visa Valid For?
The Global Talent Visa is initially valid for up to five years. It is possible to apply to extend it for an additional five years, however some holders are able to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the UK after three years of being a Global Talent Visa holder. This depends on your existing Global Talent Visa and the criteria under which it was granted. In most cases, those identified as leaders rather than potential leaders in their field may be eligible for ILR in the shorter time period of three years.
In addition, if you have lived in the UK as a Global Talent Visa holder for five years you can opt to apply for ILR rather than an extension if you fulfil the criteria to do so.
One significant limitation regarding the duration of your stay on a Global Talent Visa is the importance of having a job offer from a UK employer that is endorsed by the Home Office. If your job offer expires or if you decide to leave your job, you may be required to apply for a new visa or leave the UK.
Maintaining the skills and salary requirements for the Global Talent Visa is important for the duration of your stay. Failure to meet these requirements may make you ineligible for an extension or unable to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).
How to Extend Global Talent Visa
You can apply for a Global Talent Visa Extension in the UK if either the organisation that recommended has not withdrawn its endorsement, or you applied for a Global Talent Visa based on a qualifying award you received, and the award has not been withdrawn.
To be eligible for an extension, you must have a valid Global Talent Visa and also continue your work or research in the same field of expertise as your first application.
It is important to note that if you are accompanied by a partner or children who also need to extend their visas, they must submit separate applications. They have the option to apply either with your application or at any time before their current visa expires.
The standard process for extending this visa is completing an online application using the official visa application portal of the UK government. It will be necessary for you to register, complete the forms, and submit the required documents. Although the processing period for visa extensions varies, it usually takes a few weeks. To prevent any challenges to your stay in the UK, it is therefore advised that you apply early.

Fees Associated With Extending the Global Talent Visa
When extending this visa, the application fee is £766, whether you are applying from inside or outside the UK.
If your partner or children wish to accompany or join you in the UK later, they are also required to pay the same visa fee of £766. The cost covers providing biometric information, including fingerprints and a photograph.
In addition, paying the IHS is a mandatory part of your application. The exact amount you will need to pay can vary, so it is advisable to check the specific healthcare surcharge fee that applies to your circumstances before applying.

Global Talent Visa Extension Processing Time
The processing time for a Global Talent Visa extension takes 8 weeks. However, this timeframe can vary based on individual circumstances. For instance, if your case is a complex one or if there are issues with your application, it could lead to an extended processing period.
Several factors influence the processing time for a Global Talent Visa extension:
- If your application is incomplete or lacks necessary documentation.
- Complex cases, such as changing employers or having dependent family members.
- Current demand for visas being handled by the Home Office
Applying For a Visa Extension From Outside the UK
If you need to extend your Global Talent Visa from outside the UK, you should:
- Ensure you meet the eligibility criteria
- Your endorsement from a recognised endorsing body has not been withdrawn
- If you initially applied on the basis of an award, this award has not been withdrawn
- Complete the online application for the visa extension.
- If required, provide your biometric information at a visa application centre.
- Submit your application and pay the necessary fees.
Once you have submitted your application, you will be notified of the decision. If your application is successful, you will be granted a new visa that will be valid for five years or three years depending on the field you have been granted the Global Talent Visa.
Global Talent Visa Extension Application Refusal
Global talent visa holders are entitled to challenge their visa extension application if rejected. You can do this through an appeal process. You need to submit your appeal within 28 days of receiving the refusal notice.
To appeal, you must complete an appeal form and submit it to the UK government. If your appeal is successful, your visa extension will be granted. If your appeal is unsuccessful, you will have to leave the UK. You should reach out to an immigration specialist for further advice if your application is rejected.
Global Talent Visa to ILR
If you are a Global Talent Visa holder, you can apply for ILR once you meet the eligibility criteria. ILR means you have the right to live and work in the UK without time restrictions. To apply for ILR, you must:
- Have lived in the UK for five years or three years, depending on the field you work in and your level of expertise.
- Continued to meet the visa criteria
- Show a good moral character.
- Not broken any UK immigration laws
- Meet the English language and life in the UK requirements.

- Proof of income, such as tax returns or bank statements.
- Evidence of your accommodation, such as a tenancy agreement or mortgage statement.
- Ties to the UK, such as membership in a UK-based organisation or a UK bank account.
