Concerns about Wages and Skill Shortages
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has requested the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) review the recruitment of IT and engineering workers to better understand why many companies look overseas to fill vacancies.
In a letter to MAC’s chair, Professor Brian Bell, Ms Cooper explained the IT and engineering sectors currently account for a large share of UK work visas issued.
She added: “The government would like the MAC to set out the reasons behind this and potential future demand on these sectors.
“These must be balanced against the risks of undercutting the wages of British workers and of over-complicating the system.”
The Scope of the MAC Review
The review will enable the MAC to consider why some roles are unable to be filled by UK-based workers and whether businesses have done enough to tackle skill shortages before recruiting staff from overseas.
It is possible the review could look at whether employers within the IT and engineering sectors could be encouraged via policy changes to focus more on hiring from within the UK to reduce reliance on foreign workers.
Any immigration policy changes could mean some employers may find it increasingly difficult next year to hire overseas workers, therefore consider seeking professional immigration advice now if you currently have vacant roles that may require global talent.
