Self-harm incidents surge 2,000% in detention centres among Chanel asylum seekers
Reports confirm that Priti Patel’s bid to deport asylum seekers has led to a surge in serious self-harm cases.
Self-harm incidents have surged at one of the detention centres holding asylum seekers who have entered the UK by crossing the English Channel on small boats. Figures revealed that almost 100 incidents required medical treatment in a removal centre near Gatwick Airport, London, despite the overall number of detainees has reduced significantly.
The shocking news come after Priti Patel’s pledge to make crossing the Channel a route unviable for entering the UK. Lawyers and charities advocate that the surge in self-harm cases and hunger strikes is the result of the Home Office’s policy on speedy removals and lack of protection for those who have experienced trafficking or torture. This approach may result in people not getting adequate legal advice before their removal, nor the opportunity to disclose their situation as victims of trafficking or torture before they are detained.
