Travellers Feel Impact of US Embassy Decisions
Many high-level professionals are having their US visa applications rejected by the US embassy in London.
According to the Financial Times, there has been an increase in business executives being turned down for tourist or business visas due to low-level historic misdemeanours.
It is claimed many finance and tech employees are being refused visas for offences such as drink driving and cannabis use. In some cases, applicants are unable to secure a visa even if they were only arrested for the incident but never convicted.
The reason for refusal is via the 214(b) rule, which allows the denial of travel because a person has not sufficiently shown they qualify. In most cases, the decision can not be appealed.
“Unlikely to Obtain a Visitor Visa”
One immigration lawyer told the FT: “In our experience, anybody that has a criminal irregularity, no matter how minor, is unlikely to obtain a visitor visa, and in some cases even a work visa, from London right now.”
The US embassy in London no longer publishes how many visas it issues each month, and it is thought the stricter processing is in line with the US’s widespread tougher approach to immigration.
A statement from the US Department of State said: “The Trump administration is upholding the highest standards of national security and public safety through the visa process. . . [the US] will not tolerate foreign visitors violating our laws.”
