Uncertainty for US Student Visa Holders
More than one million international students are currently enrolled in colleges and universities in the US and there are concerns they could be impacted by Trump’s promised tough stance on immigration.
The incoming president has already announced plans to expand his previous travel ban and revoke student visas held by those classed as “anti-American”.
Concerns over changes in immigration policies and the introduction of additional checks at US borders means there is much uncertainty for overseas students, especially those who have returned home for the holidays.
Students Given January Deadline
With Trump’s inauguration set to take place on January 21st, many educational institutions are suggesting students return before this date to avoid potentially problems re-entering the US.
Cornell University has advised its international students to consider their upcoming travel plans and assess whether they should return earlier.
“A travel ban is likely to go into effect soon after inauguration,” explained the university.
“The ban is likely to include citizens of the countries targeted in the first Trump administration: Kyrgyzstan, Nigeria, Myanmar, Sudan, Tanzania, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela, Yemen, and Somalia. New countries could be added to this list, particularly China and India.”
The University of Southern California has also emailed its 17,000 international students to suggest they return to campus at least one week before Trump takes office to avoid being impacted by any possible travel bans.
“While there’s no certainty such orders will be issued, the safest way to avoid any challenges is to be physically present in the US before the Spring semester begins on January 13, 2025,” said the university’s Office of International Service.
Automatic Green Cards for Graduates?
It is an uncertain time for student visa holders in the US, especially as many do not have a pathway to permanent residence in the US.
However, there could be some better news if Trump follows up on his promise to automatically issue Green Cards to foreign students who graduate from a US college. Yet, there remains little information on whether this policy will be adopted and even if it is, then it is likely to be limited to specialist skilled graduates.
