Overview of the Required Canada Visa For Nigerians

Nigerians need a visa to enter Canada, whether visiting or staying permanently. The kind of visa required will depend on the purpose of the trip; there are business, tourist, student, work, and visiting visas.

While the requirements for each visa vary, having a valid passport and all requested documents are always mandatory.

Choosing the right visa requires considering the purpose and duration of your stay in Canada. Providing correct and honest details during the application process is important, as any false document can lead to consequences like visa rejection, delays, or even travel bans.

Contact an immigration expert for more information about which visa most suits your needs.

Canada Visa Application Process From Nigeria

The general application process for visas by the government of Canada is the same, irrespective of the type of visa you are applying for.

You must download the appropriate form and use a checklist to ensure you have everything. Fill out a consent form if you work with a visa advisor, such as the team at IAS.

The next phase is ensuring all the information is correct and complete by carefully filling out the application forms. When you are done, pay any applicable costs and take your application form to the closest visa application centre. At this point, you will need to pay any remaining visa fees.

A receipt with a special number for tracking your online application will be sent to you after submission. It is important to retain this receipt as proof of applying for a Canadian visa.

Required Documents for a Canada Visa

Below is a list of requirements for a Canada Visa:

  • Passport (valid for a minimum of 6 months)
  • A completed visa application form
  • Two colour passport-style photographs
  • Evidence of payment for the visa application (receipt) and, if necessary, the biometric fee
  • A bank statement dated within the last three months showing you have sufficient funds for the trip
  • Travel schedule and a copy of the flight ticket
  • Any previous passports
  • Certificate of marriage (if applicable)
  • Evidence of relationships in Nigeria (such as a letter of employment, an investment, evidence of a company or asset, etc.)

It is required that all documents be in either French or English. If not, you must send it with a photocopy of the original document, its translation into English or French, and an affidavit from the translator.

You do not need to submit original documents unless specifically requested by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Certified photocopies are generally sufficient.

Requirements for the Canada Visa

The government of Canada has other requirements that should be met by applicants, including:

Clearances From the Police

You must provide evidence that you are not a threat to Canadian society and have no prior criminal history. Getting a police clearance or certificate in your nation of origin will enable you to accomplish this.

You could occasionally be required to present police clearances from each nation where you have resided for six months.

Medical Examination

To get a Canadian visa, your health must be in good standing. You could be asked to submit to a medical checkup and attach the results with your application to demonstrate that.

However, unless you work directly with people, a medical test is usually unnecessary if you want to remain for under six months. Also, your regular doctor cannot do your checkup but an approved panel of doctors must do it.

Purpose of Travel

When you apply for a Canada Visa, you must specify why you are visiting Canada. The criteria may consist of:

  • An invitation letter from your host or the friend or relative you will be staying with
  • Details on who to contact to support the declared aim of your visit
  • Any documentation proving your reason for travelling
  • A letter of invitation and support
  • You could be required to provide an invitation letter from someone in Canada. The person must possess either permanent residence or be a citizen of Canada

Details about the name, date of birth, address, phone number, nature of your relationship with the letter writer, duration of your stay in Canada, the location of your stay, the date of your departure, and how you intend to finance your own needs must be included in the letter.

Canada Visa Requirements for Minors

In Canada, children who are less than 18 are referred to as minors. They must abide by the same regulations as any other visitor to enter Canada. If minors enter Canada without the required documents in the company of adults other than their parents, they will be subject to a more thorough inspection.

If a minor is travelling alone, they must present their passport (even if the child’s information is in a parent’s passport, it will not be accepted), a copy of their birth certificate and a signed authorisation letter from both parents or their legal guardian, which should include the address, name and phone number of the parents as well as the phone number and address of the adult who will be the child’s carer in Canada.

If the child is travelling with just one parent, the child’s passport, photocopy of the parent’s national ID card or passport, a copy of the child’s birth certificate, and a letter of authorisation, signed by the parent who isn’t travelling with the child should also be provided.

Copies of the legal custody paperwork should be carried by the parent travelling with the child if the parents share custody of the child and are separated or divorced. If the child is travelling with adoptive parents or a legal guardian, a copy of the custody or adoption documents, whichever applies, should be given to the child.

Canada Visa Fees

Depending on if you pay online or in person at a visa application office, the cost of a Canada Visa varies. However, application processing costs and biometric fees are the two main categories of expenses. The cost of a Canada Visa is not refundable and biometric costs are not included in the fees listed below. All specified costs are given in Canadian dollars (CAD).

  • Study permit (extensions inclusive) $150
  • Work permit (extensions inclusive) $155
  • The maximum cost for work permits for groups of performers and their employees$100
  • Single entrance or multiple entry (extensions inclusive) for visitor visas $100
  • Visitor visa: family maximum cost $500
  • Visitor record (with extensions included) $75

There will also be a biometric charge of CAD 85 per person in addition to the standard visa payments mentioned above. The highest biometric charge that families must pay for a visiting visa (TRV) is CAD 170, if they apply jointly.

Financial Document for Canada Visa Application

To be granted a visa, you must show that you have adequate funds to sustain yourself while in Canada so you do not become dependent on Canadian public funds.

The amount needed varies based on the location, length of stay, and travel purpose. Tourists usually require less than students or job seekers, although living expenses vary around Canada.

You can provide proof of your financial ability with the following documents:

Bank Statements

Bank statement records should show that you have been able to manage your funds well over the last few months with a steady and sufficient balance.

These statements should be recent and include your full name and account information. The constant state of your account balance provides the visa officials with confidence in your continued financial stability.

Employment Records

Showing employment-related documentation is an effective means of confirming financial stability if you are employed. An employment letter and some recent pay stubs, usually from the last three months, give an overview of your consistent income. Relevant details like your position, pay, and duration of employment should be included in the employment letter.

Evidence of Assets

Showing off your fixed assets can make an enormous impact on your application, along with your liquid assets. Documents about investments, company and property ownership show financial depth and capacity outside current cash flow.

These records highlight your general stability and financial health and should be current and legitimate. Those who work for themselves or do not have a steady source of income can benefit from proving their assets.

Documents of Sponsorship

If someone financially supports your visit to Canada, their financial support document is important. The sponsor’s official letter of support should include details about job information and bank statements.

They should clarify in this letter that they are willing and able to pay for your expenses while you are in Canada. It is also important to be clear about your relationship with your sponsor and, if relevant, the sponsor’s citizenship in Canada.

A successful application depends on the provision of a thorough and correct document. Contact us to help verify all your documents and improve your chances of getting your visa approved. Call +23413438882 or +44 (0) 3316300929 for assistance.

Types of Visas Available for Canada

Canada Study Permit

With a 38-day to 4-month processing time and validity of an extra 90 days after the study period, you can study in Canada if you have a study permit. You will require an admission letter, proof of school fees, a transcript for the Master’s course, and, if required, a bank statement from your sponsor.

Business Visa for Canada

A Canada business visa is primarily intended for business purposes; it does not grant you the authority to extend an invitation to anybody. This is a transitory visa. The embassy determines visa validity, and a letter of invitation from the host or conference organiser is required.

Canada Tourist Visa

This visa type, a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), permits Nigerians to enter Canada for tourism-related purposes. However, a Canada tourist visa does not allow you to bring dependents, nor can you work in Canada with the visa.

Canada Work Permit

You must get a Canadian work permit if you want to work in Canada. If your work permit expires and you are now employed in Canada and have filed for permanent residence, you might be qualified for a bridging open work visa. This implies that you can continue working while deciding whether to approve your permanent residence application.
