“Additional Screen and Vetting” Required
According to CBS News, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has taken the step of temporarily pausing some Green Card approvals so that additional vetting can be carried out.
The Department of Homeland Security confirmed the decision following President Donald Trump’s Protecting the United States from Foreign Terrorists and Other National Security and Public Safety Threats executive order.
“USCIS is placing a temporary pause on finalizing certain Adjustment of Status applications pending the completion of additional screening and vetting to identify potential fraud, public safety, or national security concerns,” said a statement from the department.
Ongoing Uncertainty for US Immigration
It is not clear how long the hold on processing will last or what the extra vetting will involve and what the impact could potentially be on those already in the US who have been granted refugee or asylum status.
There is also uncertainty with the ongoing speculation about a potential travel ban to the US for nationals from more than 40 countries. Although, Trump has yet to confirm which countries will be included in the ban, it is believed it could have a significant impact on international students as well as competitors in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
