Visa-free travel ends for South Africa & Botswana nationals
As of 10 July 2024, South African and Botswanan nationals must obtain a visa to enter Ireland. The measure also requires transit visas for those passing through Ireland en route to another destination.
The change ends a period of visa-free entry for South African and Botswanan tourists. It aims to tackle increased asylum cases from the countries, aligning Ireland with the Schengen Area and UK policies. Minister of Justice Helen McEntee said:
.”The new requirements are introduced to bring Ireland into closer alignment with the Schengen Area and with the UK to ensure immigration controls are effective”
Transitional arrangements provide a grace period for those with pre-booked travel plans, ensuring minimal disruption. It allows those with pre-booked travel to enter Ireland without a visa until 9 August 2024, provided they have a valid passport and proof of their travel arrangements.
Changes at a glance
- Nationals of South Africa and Botswana must obtain a visa to travel to Ireland starting 10 July 2024.
- A transit visa is required for those transiting through Ireland.
- Transitional arrangements permit travel without a visa until 9 August 2024 for those with pre-booked travel and valid documentation.
Dedicated South Africa Desk and Visa Application Centres
The Dublin Visa Office will establish a dedicated ‘South Africa desk’ to handle the anticipated increase in visa applications. Additionally, in collaboration with VFS Global, three Visa Application Centres (VACs) will be set up throughout South Africa. These facilities aim to efficiently manage the influx of applications and ensure a smooth process for applicants. South African nationals should utilise the new VACs for a streamlined visa application process.
Minister McEntee said:
“The visa system is an essential part of our immigration system to determine who can travel to Ireland,”
“A wide range of factors are taken into account when introducing visa requirements to ensure we can continue to facilitate travel with processes that are robust, effective, and fair.”
Impact on Economic and Cultural Relations
The new visa requirements are expected to affect travel patterns and economic relations between Ireland and South Africa, potentially influencing tourism, business exchanges, and educational partnerships.
