Finale for the Spanish Golden Visa
Spain has set a date for the end of its much-anticipated Golden Visa program, one of the most popular investment visas in the world. After months of speculation, it is officially time to say goodbye.
Phased End to Golden Visa
Since the government announced the end to the Golden Visa in April 2024, the government has issued over 570 Golden Visas. The change is intended to curb housing speculation and make housing affordable for Spanish residents.
Alternatives to the Golden Visa in Spain
Most people will choose to look elsewhere in Spain, following the announcement. There are still multiple options to do business, work, study, join family or retire in Spain. Here are some of the alternative Spain Visas:
Golden Visas in Other Countries
Some countries still offer a Golden Visa, but this number is dwindling since Portugal, the UK, and Ireland put theirs on the scrap heap between 2022 and 2024. Here are the remaining Golden Visa programs:
| Country | Residency/Investment Requirements |
| Italy | €250,000 in an Italian limited company or €500,000 in startups. |
| Malta | Citizenship for €690,000 after 12–36 months. |
| Hungary | Relaunched in 2024; requires €250,000 in real estate funds or €1M donation to higher education. |
| Greece | Property or other investments of over €250,000 is required to get five-year residence. |
Who Else Has Scrapped Golden Visa Programs?
A growing number of countries are scaling back or ending their Golden Visa schemes::
- Portugal ended its popular Golden Visa program in 2024, citing housing affordability concerns. The program previously allowed investments starting at €280,000 for residency.
- Ireland terminated its Immigrant Investor Programme in early 2023, citing vulnerabilities to tax evasion and minimal economic benefits. Investment requirements included €500,000 in donations or a €1 million business investment over three years.
- The United Kingdom scrapped its Tier 1 Investor Visa in February 2022 as part of a crackdown on “dirty money”.. Applicants needed to invest £2 million in the UK economy.
