What is a recommendation letter?

A recommendation letter for the UK Global Talent Visa is required to validate an applicant’s credentials. It helps demonstrate a track record of ‘exceptional ability’ and is designed to prove, as well as, add context to the applicant’s achievements in their field. These references are written by a person who knows you, has worked with you, and is renowned in your industry.

Who do you have to convince of ‘exceptional ability’?

Exceptional ability is determined by proving you are a leader in your field. All Global Talent Visa pathways require recommendation letters to meet the criteria. They are used to convince an endorsing body of an applicant’s suitability for the Global Talent Visa.

Each endorsing body has slightly different criteria, so it is best to look closer to determine eligibility.

Industry Bodies

Creative Arts and Culture

  • Arts Council England – the endorsing body for exceptional promise and exceptional talent applications in literature, music, theatre, visual arts, dance and combined arts.

For the fashion design industry:

  • British Fashion Council

For the Architectural industry:

  • Royal Institute of British Architects

For film and TV you can apply under ‘exceptional talent’ to:

  • Producers Alliance for Cinema and Television

  • Tech Nation

Research and Academia

  • UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)
  • Royal Society (for scientific research)
  • British Academy (for humanities and social sciences)
  • Academy of Medical Sciences (for medical research)

How many recommendation letters should I have?

Providing three or more letters is best and is required for most bodies. Your application can be rejected if you don’t provide the appropriate amount. It’s best to check with the body you apply to, to ensure you have enough. Three or more letters help to show patterns, acknowledgement of your abilities, and consistency. Tech Nation recommends preparing 4-5 letters.

Key criteria for choosing your recommenders

It is best practice to select a recommender widely recognised in their field. It is recommended that somebody holding a notable position with proven credentials be chosen. Guidelines for selecting a recommender:

  • Typically, the recommender must have worked with you for 12 months or more, but this varies according to the endorsing body
  • A recommender should be familiar with the applicant’s work and achievements.
  • Your recommender should hold a key position in an organisation that has a track record of success/development in the applicant’s field
  • The recommendations should relate to the role where ‘exceptional talent’ lies
  • You should not select more than one recommender from the same organisation

Obtaining Permission and Providing Information

Before requesting a recommendation, confirm the recommender is willing and able to provide a detailed letter. Provide them with your CV, personal statement, and key achievements to ensure they can write a comprehensive and supportive letter.

How to Write An Effective Recommendation Letter For a Global Talent Visa Application

A well-written recommendation serves as third-party validation of an applicant’s professional accomplishments and potential. The effectiveness of this letter can influence the decision-making process. We define the key considerations and questions you or your recommender should know before putting pen to paper when writing a letter of recommendation.

Our experienced lawyers can help you craft or check recommendation letters to adhere to relevant endorsing bodies.

Whether you need support with the process, a specific aspect of the application or need advice, we’re here to help. Call IAS on +44 (0)333 414 9244 or online for personalised support.

Recommendation Letter Structure & Style

The letter should reflect a balanced, honest and objective view of the applicant’s qualifications and potential. It should be formal with a professional tone and style. In most cases the letter must be:

  • Typed, dated, and up to 3 A4 pages (excluding credentials/contact info).
  • Signed by the author
  • Include a phone number, email, and the organisation’s logo/address
  • Attach the author’s CV or proof of credentials.

It’s important to check the formatting and style required for your chosen endorsing body and the structure. Generally, a compelling recommendation letter should tell a story, showcasing achievements and your impact on your industry.

Recommendation Letters should include:

Introduction

  • A good recommendation letter should start with an introduction briefly outlining why the applicant is being recommended.

Author & Business Overview

  • The second section should detail who the author is and who they represent, drawing on the size and scope of the enterprise or organisation. It should include an overview noting the organisation’s credentials, structure, and core statistics.

Details of professional relationship

  • This section should concisely describe the recommender’s professional relationship with the applicant. It should outline the author’s qualifications, offering a solid context for their endorsement.
  • Forming a narrative of events up to or shortly after hiring the applicant can be beneficial. Relevant details can include if you headhunted the applicant, forged a relationship at a conference, or if they were central to a milestone. For creative applicants, you might have hired them after seeing a film or play of theirs, for example. Likewise, you may have hired an academic for a specific study where they specialise.

Details of the applicant’s notable achievements

  • This section should highlight the successes directly or indirectly impacted by the applicant. It should provide a concise yet thorough overview of the applicant’s achievements within their sector. Align these accomplishments with the objectives of the Global Talent Visa program.
  • The section should highlight any measurable successes and notable projects to strengthen the application. It can include details of awards, speeches, media appearances and contributions to articles or studies. Specific examples are crucial. Providing evidence is central to substantiating claims.

Why is the applicant exceptional? Comment on the applicant’s character, qualities and skills

  • This section should focus on why the applicant is considered ‘exceptional’ and articulate the applicant’s key skills. These include professional competencies, technical expertise, and soft skills like leadership and creativity. It’s important to align these skills with the requirements of the endorsing body for the chosen Global Talent Visa pathway, and show how the applicant stands out in their field.

Explain how the applicant may contribute to their field and the UK economy

  • This section should discuss how the applicant’s presence in the UK will make a positive impact. It needs to outline the applicant’s future work plans and how these align with the UK’s industry needs, emphasising the mutual benefits. This section should reflect on past achievements and project a clear vision of the applicant’s potential impact and prospects within the UK’s landscape in their given field.

Sign & Legitimise

  • Ensure letters are signed digitally (e.g., with DocuSign) and include the author’s LinkedIn profile or CV.

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing to offer my highest recommendation for Jeremie’s application for the Global Talent Visa. Jeremie has exceptional skills that have had a demonstrable impact on DG Digital’s growth. I believe his contribution to the UK technology sector will be outstanding.

[Introduction to author & business]

My name is Esther Ojo. I am the Director of DG Digital, a Nigerian-based company specialising in full turnkey digital solutions for small and medium-sized businesses. We help create and maintain visually stunning and functional websites. We employ 200 people and have an annual turnover of £4.7 million, growing by 15% in 2024.

[Professional relationship]

I first met Jeremie at the Africa Tech Expo in 2019. He was speaking on Simplifying Your User Interface. The topic immediately captured our interest as it was central to what we wanted to achieve for our B2B clients moving forward. His knowledge blew us away. We spoke to him at the end of his speech, and our initial conversation prompted us to hire him 2 months later.

He joined DG Digital as a senior software engineer. From the beginning, it was evident that Jeremie possessed a unique blend of technical expertise and creative problem-solving abilities. Over the years, we have collaborated on numerous projects. I have seen firsthand how his contributions have enhanced our company’s offerings and success. He has consistently demonstrated exceptional talent and dedication to his work.

[Details of the applicant’s notable achievements]

Implementing Jeremie’s source coding has contributed to our impressive business growth. Since integrating his work, DG Digital has experienced a 15% year-on-year growth. Before Jeremie’s impact, we were growing at 6% year on year. This jump in growth rate indicates Jeremie’s contributions’ transformative impact. He was promoted to Senior Tech Manager and then CTO within 3 years.

Jeremie’s impact on staff retention for our business has also been keenly felt. His exceptional management has kept the best talent in-house. Employment retention has gone up 33% since Jeremie was made CTO.

Jeremie’s contributions to DG Digital have not gone unnoticed within the industry, earning him industry-recognition including as the Digital Innovator of the Year award for two consecutive years (2022 and 2023). He contributed heavily to us winning the Best Web Development Company award at the Nigerian Tech Awards in 2023 for the first time in our history.

[Why Jeremie is Exceptional?]

Jeremie’s innovative coding has enabled us to explore new business avenues. For instance, we have successfully signed multiple million-pound deals directly attributable to our website’s enhanced capabilities and reliability. One notable collaboration includes a £5 million contract with an international e-commerce platform. This was primarily facilitated by the advanced features and seamless integration of Jeremie and his team’s work.

Throughout his tenure at DG Digital, Jeremie has proven his abilities across several critical projects. Without the source coding managed and developed by Jeremie, our service would lag behind the competition. His contributions since then have been consistently exceptional. He has overhauled employee retention and new business. His business developments in artificial intelligence alone have saved over a million pounds across 3 years.

[Achievements and Character]

Jeremie’s dedication to his work, attention to detail, and relentless pursuit of excellence set him apart. He is an exceptional coder and a team player who inspires and mentors his colleagues. His ability to remain calm under pressure and his willingness to take on challenging tasks are a testament to his outstanding work ethic and character.

[Prospects in the UK and Potential Contribution to the Digital Economy]

Jeremie’s technical expertise, innovative mindset, and proven track record of driving business success make him an exemplary candidate for the Global Talent Visa.

I firmly believe that Jeremie will significantly contribute to the UK digital economy. His exceptional talent, dedication, and innovative approach make him a key asset to any organisation. The UK’s digital sector benefits greatly from his skills, particularly in driving technological advancements and fostering growth in small and medium-sized enterprises.

[Conclusion]

I wholeheartedly support Jeremie’s application and believe he will continue to make outstanding contributions to the field. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require any further information.

Sincerely,

Esther Ojo

CEO, DG Digital

Frequently Asked Questions

Supporting evidence is required for your endorsement application. While this is detached from the Letters of Recommendation, it can be beneficial to sync some of your evidence with your recommendations for continuity and credibility.

Some documents you choose to show should be mentioned in letters of recommendation, your personal statement and your CV.

For example, if you are applying for the tech route via Tech Nation and have been a guest speaker at an event your recommender attended, raising it in a letter of recommendation will add relevance, credibility and help prove ‘exceptional ability’ to support your evidence.

Mandatory Criteria:

High Remuneration: Provide your salary details and compare them to industry standards.

Publications: Share articles or papers you’ve written, showing their impact and reach.

Significant Contribution: Detail your work at key companies. Include example work, screenshots, and feedback.

Optional Criteria:

Recognition Outside Work: Document mentorship roles, volunteer work, and speaking/media engagements.

Impact: Highlight your contributions to support reference letters and media mentions.

  • Grammatical and spelling errors in a recommendation letter can be harmful to credibility. Allocate sufficient time for drafting to ensure a letter’s professionalism.
  • Lacking information from the applicant on the full context of their achievements and professional background can be harmful. A recommendation letter should be brief and factual. Always ask the applicant for supporting documents like a CV to help fill the gaps.
  • Not seeking feedback can mean you don’t miss opportunities to showcase the applicant’s strengths.
  • Avoid generalisations and overly complex language. Instead, emphasise concrete examples and achievements.
